Installing the App

Scriblit runs in your web browser, but you don’t have to keep it in a browser tab. Most browsers can install Scriblit as an app in a couple of clicks, so it gets its own icon and opens in its own window, just like a program you downloaded. There is nothing separate to buy or download; the install uses a feature already built into your browser.

Why install it

  • Scriblit opens in its own window, without the address bar and browser tabs around it, so you have more room to write.
  • You get an icon in your dock, taskbar, Start menu, or home screen, and you launch Scriblit with a single click or tap.
  • The installed app keeps working without an internet connection once you have opened it while online, and your manuscripts stay saved on your device.

What installing actually does

Installing is lightweight and safe. Your browser saves a shortcut and a cached copy of the app so it can open on its own and run offline; it is the same Scriblit, signed in to the same account, not a different program. Nothing is submitted to your computer’s system beyond that shortcut, and you can remove the app at any time without losing any work, because your manuscripts live in your .spb files and your own Google Drive, not inside the app.

Which browsers can install Scriblit

Installing a web app is supported by most modern browsers, but the exact steps differ. If you don’t see an install option in your browser, the surest choice on a computer is Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, which both support it fully.

  • Chrome and Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, and Android): full support, with an install button right in the browser.
  • Safari on a Mac (macOS Sonoma / macOS 14 and later) and on an iPhone or iPad (iOS / iPadOS 16.4 and later): supported from the menu described below.
  • Firefox: install support is newer and varies by system. If Firefox doesn’t offer to install Scriblit, use Chrome or Edge instead.

Installing on a computer

Chrome or Edge

  1. Open Scriblit and sign in, so the browser recognizes it as an app.
  2. Look at the right-hand end of the address bar for the install icon, a small screen or monitor with a downward arrow. Click it. (You can also open the browser menu and choose Install Scriblit; in Edge it may appear under Apps → Install this site as an app.)
  3. Confirm Install in the prompt. Scriblit gets its own icon and opens in its own window.

Safari on a Mac

  1. Open Scriblit in Safari on macOS Sonoma (macOS 14) or later.
  2. From the menu bar, choose File → Add to Dock…, then confirm. Scriblit is added to your Dock and opens in its own window.

Installing on a phone or tablet

iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Open Scriblit in Safari on iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow), then choose Add to Home Screen and confirm. Scriblit’s icon appears on your home screen.

Android (Chrome or Edge)

  1. Open Scriblit and sign in.
  2. Open the browser menu (the three dots) and choose Install app or Add to Home screen, then confirm.

Opening and removing the app

Once installed, launch Scriblit from its icon like any other app; it opens in a clean window of its own. To remove it later, uninstall it the way you remove any app on your system (for example, right-click the icon, or use your browser’s installed-apps list). Removing the app never touches your saved .spb manuscripts.
